Filing
December 27, 2007Today we officially are filing for bankruptcy. All I have to do is drop off our certified check to the lawyer’s office for his fees and they will electronically file the documents today.
Our credit will take a hit but the end is in sight.

I’m sorry. I’m sure this is a mixed blessing for you right now
It is a mixed blessing. It sucks to realize financially things are as bad as they are. However, it gives us a way to relieve the heavy pressure and stress of trying to figure how to get out of it. We make enough to live comfortably and securely but not enough to really make any progress on paying off the debt we had, especially once they starting coming after the deficit from the short sale on our old house.
4 years ago, before Widget came, we were just fine financially. We had most of the fees saved for adoption, had a manageable mortgage payment and car payment (just one). When we made the decision to move from Holland to Grand Rapids as we were both going to be working in Grand Rapids, that is when things started going out of control: we ended up buying a house at the top of our price range, we put in an offer NOT contingent on the sale of our other house, we used up our adoption savings to cover the costs of closing and moving then refinancing once we sold our home. Of course, 3 months later the call came for Widget and we used credit to pay the fees, I worked less and it all went downhill from there. It is a nasty spiral once it starts!!!
